Tanner's Eagle Project

Tanner has worked hard and gotten all of his scout merit badges done.

He was ready to do his project. 

This spring he went to a South Jordan City meeting and they gave lots of ideas. He liked the idea of painting fire hydrants. This summer he worked on going around and choosing which hydrants to paint. 

It turns out that all of the hydrants in our neighborhood were awful. So that made it convenient. 

We did a practice one to see how hard it would be, to see what kind of brushes worked, and what supplies we needed. This picture has the "can get paint on them" clothes so they are kind of weird. 

Tanner spent the last week gathering supplies and getting maps made and flyers printed so that he could ask people to come help him. 

Tuesday right after school we started putting plastic down around each hydrant. It took a while. There were 20 of them. (well, 19 because we already painted one) 

He and Andre poured the paint into different little containers. 

Here are all the guys and leaders ready to help- and more that showed up later.

We have such a supportive youth group and the leaders really care about the boys. Thank you to everyone who helped. 

I was driving around helping and I was helping this cute group of boys paint

- so I did not get a picture of all of the groups of painters. Here are a few of them.

and by the time I got around to taking pictures, the groups were just finishing because it was dark. 

And there were lots of donuts- they cleaned us out! 

Everyone got a little dirty- hopefully no one got paint on good clothes. These two got red hands and Andre got the dirtiest. He had an "incident". But this was a shirt that he had paint on already- so that is why he wore it.

The incident was... that while he was refilling people's paint containers, the bucket broke and paint spilled in the road. He hurried and cleaned up what he could. Then when everyone was done with the project, we went back up and scrubbed the road with turpentine. It looks a lot better. It still looks like paint was spilled- but barely.

Congratulations to Tanner. My favorite part of the night was when we were all done and finished cleaning up, he said, "That was so fun!" What a great attitude. He showed off his great work ethic during the last few weeks. 

There are still a few things to do. He needs to go take "after" pictures, and send them to South Jordan City. Then he needs to get the paperwork done. But in my book, he is an Eagle Scout.
